The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 12 pm on Wednesday, just minutes after the day’s proceedings began, following intense sloganeering by opposition MPs demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) being conducted in poll-bound Bihar.
Deputy Chairperson Harivansh adjourned the House as Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge pressed for clarity on when the discussion on SIR would be scheduled. “I want to know when it (discussion on SIR) will be taken in the House. Please tell the date and time,” Kharge said before being cut off amid the growing uproar.
Meanwhile, INDIA bloc MPs continued their protest at Makar Dwar inside the Parliament complex, criticising the Election Commission’s conduct of the SIR, which they allege is politically motivated.
Despite the disruptions, the Rajya Sabha is set for a busy day with key debates scheduled. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is expected to open the debate on Operation Sindoor at 1 pm, followed by Leader of the House JP Nadda at 3 pm, according to government sources. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to deliver the concluding remarks on the matter.
In the Lok Sabha, proceedings began at 11 am, with Home Minister Amit Shah scheduled to move a resolution seeking an extension of President’s Rule in Manipur by six more months, until February 13, 2026. President’s Rule was first imposed on February 13, 2024, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh amid ongoing ethnic violence in the state.
Additionally, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is expected to introduce the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024, while MPs PP Chaudhary and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will move a motion recommending the appointment of a new member from the Rajya Sabha to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on One Nation One Election, following the retirement of P. Wilson.
